Flatiron's Build-A-Bridge program and its education outreach efforts across North America are part of a company-wide effort to introduce students to the construction industry as a career option and provide scholarships to those who are interested in studying engineering or construction management in college.
The Build-A-Bridge program offers students the opportunity to receive industry training from Flatiron employees and compete for college scholarships and a paid internship. Scholarship recipients participated in a 10-week Build-A-Bridge course that included instructional classes designed to teach engineering fundamentals, plan reading and estimating. The program culminated in a final project where students compiled and presented a bid proposal for a construction project. Flatiron selected internship recipients and distributed the scholarship awards among participants based on the final projects.
The Build-A-Bridge program is geared for students in high school in an effort to help identify the next generation of construction professionals. Since Build-A-Bridge began in 2006, nearly 100 students have completed the program. In 2013, Flatiron awarded $15,000 in scholarships to 11 high school students as part of its Build-A-Bridge program in California.
Annual Giving Back Campaign
Flatiron supports annual Giving Back campaigns that harness the generosity of our employees. During the campaign employees across the company raise money and volunteer for local charities. Local employees select a local cause to support, and Flatiron matches all employee donations to these charities and gives employees paid time off to volunteer.
Flatiron's first annual Giving Back Campaign took place in 2009. We chose to forgo annual holiday parties across the company and divert party funds to support local charities and encourage employees to give back. The charities we support are diverse - they range from national organizations such as the Ronald McDonald Charities and Habitat for Humanity to local food banks and homeless shelters.
