Career Development
At Flatiron, training and staff development is a cornerstone to our success as a company.
All staff members participate in an annual review of their personal career development plan. In conjunction with a manager, individual staff members outline their personal goals and work on fitting their goals into a career development plan that integrates with Flatiron's goals.
Training Initiatives
The corporate office in Longmont, Colorado coordinates delivery of training programs to meet development needs. Through the use of external courses, in-house courses and seminars, on the job training, and varied work assignments, staff development is tailored for maximum effectiveness. Joint seminars with our European sister companies enable employees to share ideas and techniques from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
Employees who demonstrate strong leadership potential are given opportunities to strengthen leadership skills through management training specific to the construction business, with a goal of building leaders for the future of the company.
As builders of technically complex structures, Flatiron's operations staff is continually challenged with new technologies. Our corporate training ensures our people are up-to-date on technical aspects of construction. A combination of external specialty courses and internal sharing of expertise allows our staff to maintain a high level of technical competence.
Professional Certifications
Flatiron supports the achievement and maintenance of relevant professional certifications for many staff members. Continuing education and participation in professional associations is strongly encouraged, and a large number of staff members are also members of technical societies. Participation in industry groups allows us to maintain contact with current trends, and to stay knowledgeable and up to date on regulatory changes.
The operation's staff is typically challenged to pursue certification with organizations focused on occupational safety, equipment management, construction costing, engineering, accounting, project management, and with specialty technical groups such as the American Segmental Bridge Institute. In addition, our senior managers are involved with code and industry steering committees.
Tuition Reimbursement
Flatiron makes a tuition assistance program available to long-term and full-time staff. The program is intended to allow employees to enroll in continuing education classes to further their education in their specialty area. Flatiron is intent on making sure staff is up to date on specific technical and managerial skills relevant to their positions. The program is subject to manager pre-approval, and provides a generous annual allotment for those whose training needs are being sponsored. This program is only a part of the overall company training program, which is based on individual development plans created as part of regular staff evaluations.
