Flatiron secures $136M Yadkin River Bridge project in North Carolina
(Longmont, Colo.) June 8, 2010 - Flatiron, one of the nation's largest transportation and infrastructure contractors, and joint venture partner, Lane Construction Corp., was awarded a $136 million contract by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to design and construct a new dual Interstate 85 bridge and an adjacent US 29/70 bridge spanning the Yadkin River, near Salisbury, N.C., about 40 miles north of Charlotte.
Flatiron-Lane received the highest technical score based on team qualifications, design, project approach, quality, and safety providing the best value out of four teams competing for the job.
The new I-85 bridges provide eight traffic lanes and will replace a 55-year-old, four-lane structure in one of the state's most congested sections of Interstate roadway. Flatiron-Lane will widen about three miles of I-85 Interstate to eight lanes including the north and south approach roadways to the bridges. The NCDOT will use $10 million in federal stimulus money to fund the project. Flatiron recently completed the award-winning Highway 17 Washington Bypass for NCDOT. The project, completed eight months ahead of schedule, employed the use of a pioneering application of the pile-driving operations from an erection gantry, which not only saved time and cost, but also eliminated the need for large cranes and temporary access trestles, significantly reducing environmental disturbances.
"We hope to bring this same success to the Yadkin River Bridge," said Ted Kirk, area manager.
