Two Flatiron Projects Garner ENR Recognition
Broomfield, Colorado (September 21, 2016) – Two Flatiron projects were among the projects recognized in Engineering News-Record Mountain States’ winners of the 2016 Best Projects competition.
Flatiron’s Sunset Street Bridge Replacement Project in Longmont, Colorado, tied for the title of Best Small Project (Under $10 Million), while the Denver International Airport (DIA) Gate Apron Rehabilitation and Drainage Improvements Project won a Merit Award in the Airports/Transit category.
The 16th annual award recipients were selected by a panel of 12 judges from all areas of the construction industry. Winners will be honored on October 27 in Denver.
The Sunset Street Bridge Replacement Project was a joint project between Boulder County and the City with significant involvement from the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Sunset Street serves as a primary connection from residential neighborhoods to surrounding commercial businesses. Portions of Sunset Street and the Sunset Street Bridge were destroyed by the September 2013 flood event.
Flatiron constructed a three-span bridge across the St. Vrain with associated channel grading, roadway approaches and concrete trails. Work included the replacement of the Sunset Street Bridge; removals; excavation; dewatering; bridge demolition; bridge construction; roadway construction; channel widening, storm drainage pipe and inlet construction; traffic control; erosion control; grading and site restoration of areas disturbed by the construction.
The Denver International Airport (DIA) Gate Apron Rehabilitation and Drainage Improvements Project improved the safety and operation of the concourses by replacing deteriorating pavement, mitigating drainage issues and preventing ponding. Flatiron worked to replace and repair the apron and improve the drainage of the gate pavement at Concourse C Gates C41, C43 and C45, as Phase 2 of the DIA Gate Apron CM/GC. Crews removed and replaced concrete slabs, restored the original pavement slope to enhance drainage, installed additional drains, relocated and rehabilitated utilities, and performed other associated apron work in the immediate vicinity.
