Opening Portion of Future Interstate 73 Signals Traffic Relief
Broomfield, Colorado (May 22, 2017) – A section of Future I-73, from N.C. 68 to U.S. 220, opened to traffic on Friday, May 19. The new six-mile section of highway allows two lanes in each direction to travel at 65 mph. According to North Carolina Department of Transportation officials, the absence of stoplights and intersections along this stretch of highway improves travel time and safety in this heavily traveled area of Guilford County.
The Flatiron-led joint venture design-build project is part of a planned future extension of I-73 that stretches through the state of North Carolina, and will provide a much-needed connector between N.C. 68 and U.S. 220 north of Greensboro.
Once complete, the project is expected to improve traffic mobility, encourage economic growth and help create employment opportunities in the surrounding area. The final phase of the project is expected to open in late June. Blythe Development Company is the joint venture partner on the project.
