Transportation Secretary Buttigieg Holds Ribbon Cutting for Taxiway EE

Flatiron-built taxiway will streamline travel at busy Denver International Airport. 

“There’s a lot of technology in the flight deck and in the control tower designed to keep things safe, but sometimes the best technology is concrete—literally. When planes have to cross in front of an active runway to get where they need to go, it creates added risk. That’s why we were proud to provide $50 million to help fund the construction of a new, safer taxiway, and another $30 million for 2,300 upgraded LED lights, so planes can operate safely no matter the weather.” — U.S. Transportation Sec. Flatiron marked the completion (one month ahead of schedule) of another successful project, a brand-new taxiway at Denver International Airport, the third-busiest in the world.   

The 4,500 linear foot Taxiway EE connects to an existing high-speed taxiway, allowing planes to travel more efficiently and safely from gate to runway and vice-versa. 

United States Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg hosted a ribbon-cutting alongside FAA and airport officials. Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington also attended the event. Flatiron President & COO Javier Sevilla noted, “This is another example of unparalleled Flatiron collaboration with Denver International Airport to deliver safe and sustainable aviation infrastructure. With this crucial project completed well ahead of schedule, the biggest winner is the travelling public.”

Some of EE’s highlights: 

• 800,000 cubic yards of earthwork. 
• 65,000 square yards of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement. 
• Successful relocation of critical FAA infrastructure. 
• Recycling 100% of all excess material to be used for future airport projects. 

Spotlighting Flatiron’s commitment to growing our partners, 16% of the total contract value went to small business firms.  

Flatiron is working on, or has completed, several critical projects at the airport in recent years. Among those is the expansion of Concourses A-West and B-West alongside our sister company, Turner Construction.
