Women in Construction: Recognizing Their Strength and Impact

In recognition of International Women’s Day and Women in Construction Week, we took the week to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women in the construction industry. At Flatiron, we’re committed to building a culture of inclusion and belonging to shape a stronger, more innovative future. 

This week we had the honor of spotlighting just a few of the incredible women at Flatiron who are making their mark on their industry. 

Joanna McCaughey, Field Engineer, started at our sister company, E.E. Cruz & Company, Inc., as an intern. Upon graduation she was hired full time. Now, she spends her days working on projects in the heart of New York City. At the start of the week on World Engineering Day, Joanna took us on a tour of the construction of the Emergency Ventilation Plant for the MTA subway system. Watch the full video. 

Sarah Tacker is the Vice President & District Manager in Northern California. Throughout her extensive 25-year tenure at Flatiron, Sarah has showcased an unwavering commitment to advancing the industry. From her formative years as an intern on the Million Dollar Bridge project to her current role as the leader of Flatiron’s operations in Northern California, Sarah has continuously advocated for the industry’s growth and development. Her remarkable dedication to the Heavy Civil Industry, coupled with her exceptional leadership abilities, earned her a spot on Construction Dive’s list of the 2024 Construction Champions. 

Gena Hernandez joined Flatiron three years ago and currently is the Traffic Control Manager at the Flatiron-Lane Joint Venture Renton to Bellevue project in Washington state. Throughout Gena’s 14 years in the industry, she has immersed herself in various aspects of construction, from working on bridges to erosion control and traffic management. As she’s grown into more leadership roles, Gena’s primary goal is to focus on individuals who often face exclusion and ensure that they have access to same opportunities that she has been fortunate to have.
