Attracting diverse talent. Building inclusive culture. A mission I’m proud to be a part of at Flatiron.
Members of Flatiron’s Pride Employee Resource Group, FlatOUT, Caralyn Kolberg, Miranda Patrick, and myself along with Field Engineer, Jayde Jimenez, attended the Out in STEM (“oSTEM”) Career and Graduate School Expo in Portland, Oregon. This was FlatOUT’s second year as an exhibitor at oSTEM. As we set up our booth in the exhibit hall, I noticed we were surrounded by our peers in the industry, such a clear indication of where our competitors are looking for talent and confirming the importance of Flatiron’s continued participation in oSTEM and events like it.
With over 1,100 students, professionals, and other exhibitors in attendance, we talked with several civil engineering students eager to start careers in construction and interested in what a career at Flatiron might hold. Students wanted to talk not only about the day-to-day life as a young engineer at Flatiron, which Jayde Jimenez brought real world perspective to with her work at the Denver International Airport, but also about our larger culture, inclusion and belonging, FlatOUT, and the Women’s ERG.
In all we had a great time in Portland, and we hope to see some of the new friends we made in the future as interns or even new hires!
