The beautiful Salem Parkway in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is no stranger to the spotlight. Among several recent accolades, the Green Street Bridge—a striking pedestrian bridge component of the Business 40 project—has been ranked second in Roads & Bridges “Top 10 Bridges” completed in 2021.

The Roads & Bridges feature says the “arching structure serves as an artful, iconic gateway into downtown, to inspire economic development and symbolize Winston-Salem’s 21st century aspirations.” Read more at Roads and Bridges November/December 2021 (mydigitalpublication.com).

Completed in 2020, the $101.6 million NCDOT Business 40 Reconstruction Project created 1.2 miles of new roadway in downtown Winston-Salem. As visually appealing as it is functional, the project features brick-faced walls, painted concrete and the beautiful Green Street Pedestrian Bridge. The roadway was officially renamed “Salem Parkway” during construction. Flatiron was the lead on this joint venture with Blythe Development Company.

From the 2020 community event, “Dash the Salem Parkway,” to numerous features in local publications, the project has—from the beginning—sparked positive attention.

The project received the grand prize in the 2021 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) America’s Transportation Awardshttps://americastransportationawards.org/. This national transportation competition included 80 project nominations from 25 state departments of transportation.

In September, the project was awarded the 21st Annual Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Southeast Project of the Year Award. Criteria for winning the award included advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery and finding unique solutions to project challenges.

“Flatiron is proud to have played a role in the construction of this noteworthy project that has enhanced the community of Winston-Salem,” says Jim Schneiderman, Vice President, Mid-Atlantic Division. “These accolades recognize the dedication and commitment of some great Flatiron people who overcame obstacles and worked through challenges to successfully deliver this project. This team did not simply ‘improve’ or ‘reconstruct’ a roadway – they transformed it into efficient infrastructure that’s as beautiful as it is functional.”
