Cost Engineer Reflects on Black History Month and Family Values

Texas team member says February is a time to honor the past and celebrate loved ones.
“My father is very proud of me. He always called me his mini-me,” Sierra Hill says with a laugh.
And her father has good reason to be. Sierra’s father works for a Louisiana-based contractor. Construction that improves communities and a love of family are passions of Sierra’s.

This Black History Month, she reflects on the value of family in her Port Arthur, Texas, community. “In many cultures, particularly in the Black communities, family isn’t just about the immediate nuclear family. It extends to a broader network of extended family, close friends and even people in the community who offer wisdom and care,” she says.
For Sierra, Black History Month is a community commemoration. “It’s a time to honor and celebrate the contributions and resilience of Black individuals throughout history,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to reflect on the struggles that shape the present and recognize the ongoing work for equality and justice.”
Like at home, Sierra appreciates a work environment that fosters a sense of belonging. “I feel included and valued and genuinely supported in my role,” she says. She moved into a new role as a cost engineer and is grateful to co-workers for their support. “The culture here fosters a sense of belonging, and I appreciate the commitment to create a more inclusive and empowering environment,” Sierra says proudly.
