E.E. Cruz Metro-North Project Reopens 10th Avenue Bridge to the Public

Owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the much-needed 10th Avenue Bridge Replacement has been successfully completed by E.E. Cruz & Company, Inc. ahead of schedule. The 10th Avenue superstructure is one of six bridges running along active Metro-North Commuter Rail Lines in downtown Mount Vernon that the MTA is replacing.

Under construction since March 2019, the bridge reopening marks a huge milestone for both MTA and E.E. Cruz, putting the six-part bridge renewal program one giant step closer to full attainment. More importantly, it completes this combined $22-million contract with a perfect safety record.

“The Mount Vernon Project Team maintained an unblemished safety performance record while overcoming the unique challenges posed to contractors working around active rail infrastructure”, said Joe Sheehan, PE, President of E.E. Cruz. “Their dedication, hard work, creativity and commitment enabled high quality delivery of the new bridges under budget and ahead of schedule to MTA and the surrounding community without compromise.”

The combined project, located in a highly urbanized and densely populated environment, also required E.E. Cruz to replace the 6th Avenue Bridge situated four blocks away. E.E. Cruz completed the full superstructure replacement and reopened the 6th Avenue Bridge ahead of schedule for public use in September 2020.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard commented on the success stating, “We are excited to see the reopening of the 10th Avenue Bridges this month. For years it has been closed, depriving residents and our public safety vehicles a key access point to cross our city.”
