Field Note: Route 101 Santa Maria Bridge
Flatiron has recently completed a $34.8 million project for the California Department of Transportation in Santa Maria, Calif. The Route 101 Santa Maria River Bridge project involves the widening and retrofit of two existing 29-span bridges crossing the Santa Maria River at the San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara County line several hours north of Los Angeles.
The project creates a third travel lane in each direction in addition to a bike lane along the southbound span and widening the shoulders from two feet to 10. Flatiron self-performed the pile driving work, lofting and driving 187 CISS piles, erecting 261, 72-foot-long, 45,000-pound precast girders and constructing all of the roadway and drainage work except the asphalt paving.
The project was completed in March, approximately two months ahead of schedule.
