Flatiron’s Tuition Reimbursement Program Transforms Careers

Flatiron succeeds when individuals and teams make the most of their abilities, strengths, talents and opportunities. Our Tuition Reimbursement program supports employees who want to enhance or build new skills. The program offers up to $5,250 USD per year (subject to IRS limits) for approved programs. 

Troy Smith, a Project Manager I on our I-405 project in Seattle, chose to pursue a Doctorate of Business Administration, specializing in finance, at Liberty University to deepen his understanding of corporate management. This decision aligned with his career aspirations to transition from fieldwork to office work, where he could focus more on business strategy.    

Troy had a diverse background before joining Flatiron.  

He completed basic military training in the U.S. Air Force, two associate degrees, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in business administration. He also worked in various construction roles, from Heavy Equipment Operator, Asphalt Paving Superintendent, Field Engineer to, now, Project Manager.  

His doctoral program improved his managerial and communication skills, as well as his ability to make more ethical and unbiased decisions as a Project Manager. These skills help him to build strong relationships with his team and clients and to deliver on our strategic business strategy. 

Troy also had some remarkable experiences as part of his doctoral program. He was selected to join the Walt Disney World Company Leadership & Innovation Team and spent a week in Orlando, Fla. He also is a member of the National Society of Academic Excellence.
