Work Progresses at Drayton Valley
Flatiron is replacing the Drayton Valley Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River and improving 8.5 kilometers of Highway 22.
Drayton Valley, Alberta, is an oil industry hub approximately 90 miles southwest of Edmonton. The $50 million project features a new 252-meter (826-foot) bridge with a wider, five-span deck and improved approaches that better accommodate the high volume of heavy-haul traffic that uses this route. Highway 22 has an annual average daily traffic rate of more than 7,000 vehicles a day, over 20 percent of which is truck traffic.
Between river flooding and a large embankment slide, the project has had a few hurdles to overcome, but the project has seen strong community support and interest, which is helping Flatiron to stay safe and on-time.
Completion is expected in February 2015.
